6:48: McDavid again sped full speed down the left wing this time and very nearly netted a natural hat trick but the Flames defender did a good job limiting his scoring chance to a quick wrister from in close that Smith stopped.

50.2: Drake Caggiula returned to the ice for the Oilers.

3:11: Shots are now 29-19 for Edmonton with just over three minutes to play in the middle frame.

7:10: Drake Caggiula still hasn’t returned after getting clipped on the knee by Garnet Hathaway while the two were going off for a change about five minutes into the period.

10:21: Klefbom’s blast from the left circle hit Smith square in the mask and caused the Flames goaltender’s mask to come off.

11:15: Shots are now 25-13 for Edmonton; 9-1 in the period.

13:37: McDavid’s shot from the left circle was denied on a partial breakaway but the Oilers retained possession and it resulted in a hooking penalty to Dougie Hamilton and ensuing Oilers man advantage.

17:39: Shots are now 18-12 for the Oilers.

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: Period one comes to an end with the Oilers outshooting the Flames 16-12.

2:44: Matthew Tkachuk received two minutes for holding the stick to put the Oilers on their first power play of the game.

4:17: Tanner Glass and Zack Kassian dropped the gloves for a bout at centre ice which was broken up rather quickly after Kassian got busted open.

7:48: The first penalty of the game goes to Kris Russell for holding the stick, putting the Flames on the power play.

8:20: Shots are now 11-5 for Edmonton.

8:59: After some sustained pressure in the Flames end, Connor McDavid finally broke the scoreless tie, picking up a Leon Draisaitl rebound at the doorstep and putting it past Mike Smith, who was all over the ice trying to secure his net. | EDM 1, CGY 0

12:24: Mark Letestu jams at the puck from in close but Smith stops that and also stops his rebound.

13:40: Shots on goal were 4-3 for Edmonton just past the six-minute mark.

19:21: McDavid gets in behind the Oilers defence and tries to deke out Flames netminder Mike Smith but he’s equal to the task, flashing his left pad for the big stop.
