THIRD PERIOD

0.0: CAPITAL W!!! The Oilers win it late thanks to Nuge’s shorthanded goal and Mikko Koskinen’s 24 saves. Edmonton heads into the All-Star break 24-16-3 and with points in six-straight games (5-0-1). We’re back in action on Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights in the first game of a back-to-back at Rogers Place.

1:05: EMPTY-NETTER NUGENT-HOPKINS!!! We’re looking like we’re gonna win this one. | EDM 5, WSH 3

4:03: SCOOOOOOOOOOORES!!! Nugent-Hopkins with the SHORT-HANDED GOAL!!! Hyman breaks up the play in the Oilers zone and goes in on a partial 2-on-1 with Nuge, who gets the shot following a deflection off a Capitals player before whacking it over to #93 across the crease to deposit into the empty net. What a time to score. | EDM 4, WSH 3

4:23: Professional penalty from Barrie to keep Hathaway from going in alone on a breakaway, but a penalty nonetheless. Late PP opportunity for the Caps.

8:42: Copley had his full pad off at one point during the TV timeout. The Caps goalie makin’ some adjustments.

11:18: Big kill by the Oilers for Yamamoto, who took exception on the call for his Captain taking a big hit.

13:18: McDavid gets hit hard in front of the box by Garnet Hathaway and Yamamoto takes exception, giving him a crosscheck but taking a penalty.

17:12: Puck goes in off the skate of Tyson Barrie and five-hole to tie the game. | EDM 3, WSH 3

20:00: Puck is dropped on the third period!

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: That’ll do it for 40 minutes! Oilers had a lot more jump and control of the game in the final half of the period and still lead by a goal after leading by three after the first.

52.0: UNBELIEVABLE SAVE BY MIKKO!!! When it didn’t look possible after the puck bounced off the backboards and went through his legs onto the tape of Dmitry Orlov, the Finn stuck out the pad to make an incredible stop.

4:18: Duncan Keith takes down Sheary. That’ll be two for tripping and Washington’s first powerplay.

5:13: Nearing five minutes to go in the middle frame, shots are 14-12 Oilers.

10:44: Unlucky bounce falls to Conor Sheary, who puts it home. One-goal game. | EDM 3, WSH 2

14:57: Kane gets checked into the Washington bench by Garnet Hathaway. Hard hit! Seconds later with the Oilers temporarily down a man, Koskinen is called in to make a big glove save.

20:00: The second period is underway!

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers did major damage in the opening five minutes of that first period, getting goals in quick succession from Draisaitl, Kane and McDavid before Eller pulled one back for the hosts. 3-1 Edmonton after 20 minutes!

40.6: Evgeny Kuznetsov walks in and beats Koskinen, but not the crossbar. Close.

3:11: To recap the Oilers stats after that crazy opening five minutes: Draisaitl 1G & 1A, McDavid 1G, Ceci 1A, McLeod 1A.

6:02: Can’t forget about Mikko. The big Finn takes a big blast from Martin Fehervary and parries it away confidently. He’s 3-0-1 in his last four games with a .926 save percentage and 2.43 goals-against average.

9:53: McDavid STRIKES IRON. The Captain looking extra deadly so far through 10 minutes. Can’t expect less.

12:24: Mikko Koskinen misses the poke-check on Lars Eller and he buries it to give the Caps life. | EDM 3, WSH 1

14:52: CONNOR MAKES IT THREE!!! On the back of a great piece of vision *literally*, the Captain puts it off the back of Caps goalie Ilya Samsonov from below the goal line to make it three goals in just over five minutes. That’ll chase Samsonov from the game as Pheonix Copley comes in to replace him in the Caps crease. | EDM 3, WSH 0

15:42: The Oilers will get the opportunity to make it three with Tom Wilson in the box.

16:59: “TWO” QUICK OF A START. It’s Evander Kane doubling Edmonton’s lead early, getting a twig on the point shot from Duncan Keith to notch his second goal in an Oilers uniform. Two goals in just over two minutes for the Oil. | EDM 2, WSH 0

18:30: LEOOOOOOON!!! Early go-ahead goal for the Blue & Orange courtesy of the German. The Oilers worked into the zone on a 3-on-2, with Cody Ceci saucing it to Draisaitl’s stick to deflect it up and over the shoulder of Ilya Samsonov for his 32nd of the season. | EDM 1, WSH 0
