THIRD PERIOD

0.0: It’s over. The Oilers fall just short against the Buffalo Sabres on the second game of a back-to-back. Draisaitl nets a pair of power-play goals, McDavid picks up a single assist for a 13-game scoring streak and Skinner finishes with 20 saves. The road trip continues against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

22:6: Hyman misses a yawning cage with a wrister from the left side as the Oilers pour the pressure late.

2:07: McDavid uses speed burst to try to peddle through two Buffalo defenders but can’t split them. Tippett pulls Skinner for the extra attacker.

5:35: Tokarski robs McDavid and Puljujarvi from knotting this up with a valiant sequence. First, the puck-stopper stayed composed when no. 97 went to his backhand on an in-tight 1-on-1 opportunity. Tokarski then managed to stay composed and get back into position for Puljujärvi’s one-time blast from the left circle.

9:35: Consider Perlini’s penalty killed as the Oilers go 3-for-3.

12:17: Perlini is called for hooking. Edmonton’s 2-for-2 PK goes to work.

12:26: Miller’s slap shot is handled by Skinner as the Sabres come out for the third looking to take away as much of McDavid and Draisaitl’s space as possible.

20:00: The third period has begun with the Oilers in a one-goal hole. Head Coach Dave Tippett shakes up his lines, starting Hyman, RNH and Yamamoto together.

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: The horn sounds to signal the end of the second period. Cozens nets the game-tying goal and follows it up with the go-ahead score to give Buffalo a 3-2 lead heading into the final 20. That was the predicament the Oilers were in last night before taking over in the third period.

49.9: Another goal comes courtesy of Sabres forward Cozens, who pots his second in quick succession by depositing the rebound from Vinnie Hinostroza’s breakaway attempt. Buffalo gets ahead. | BUF 3, EDM 2

11:20: Another penalty, this time Robert Hagg sits two minutes for hooking.

13:03: DUO DAMAGE! Connor McDavid goes cross-ice to Draisaitl and he forehand one-times it right through Tokarski for his second of the night to give the Oilers the lead. He has 14 goals in 13 games this season and McDavid extends his point streak to 13 games! RNH quietly picks up his second apple for 17 on the year. | EDM 2, BUF 1

15:11: Nurse is tagged with a hooking infraction. Oilers go shorthanded.

15:52: ROAD HOCKEY! Ryan Nugent-Hopkins dishes to Puljujärvi at the goal-line and he sends it to Draisaitl in front, swatting a backhander back bar and out for his 13th goal and 27th point. RNH gets assist No. 16! | EDM 1, BUF 1

17:55: Zach Hyman gets the puck at the goal-line then spins to the net with a power move but can’t stuff it past Tokarski.

20:00: The second period has begun!

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: That’s a wrap on the opening frame. Nurse’s short-side shot that skittered off the crossbar gets waived off and Ruotsalainen’s tip was too high. We stand scoreless after 20. Edmonton leads the shot count 8-6 and will start the second with 55 seconds of power-play time.

1:05: Edmonton product and former Edmonton Oil King Mark Pysyk is whistled for holding, giving the Oilers another chance while up a man.

2:15: Tyson Barrie rifles a bullet that misses its mark and dents the end boards. The Oilers power play is 0-for-2 tonight and unsuccessful in six opportunities during the road trip.

5:43: Penalty parade continues… this time Ruotsalainen gets his stick up on Cody Ceci. The two sides go 4-on-4 for 27 seconds then Edmonton gets an abbreviated power play.

7:16: The Oilers work it around nicely but the man advantage is cut short due to a Jesse Puljujärvi interference penalty.

8:37: Zemgus Girgensons is sent to the box for tripping Leon Draisaitl. Edmonton’s 44.1 percent power play gets to have some fun.

10:14: Skinner makes a great pad save on a nifty deflection by Anders Bjork which is followed by another tip by Arttu Ruotsalainen that trickles under the keeper’s pads and in. After yet another review, it was determined Ruotsalainen’s re-direction was above the crossbar, so no goal. The two sides now trade disallowed markers early.

15:41: Dylan Cozens charges up ice and gets past the Oilers defence for an individual rush against his former Lethbridge Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner but the forward loses the handle at the last second.

17:46: Darnell Nurse appears to have scored with a sharp-angle shot that ramps up netminder Dustin Tokarski’s shoulder and dings the crossbar. Upon further review, the puck never crossed the goal-line.

20:00: Let the game begin! Ryan McLeod gets bumped up to the third line centre spot with Brendan Perlini to his left and Warren Foegele on the right side, Derek Ryan plays middleman with Tyler Benson and Colton Sceviour while Kris Russell slots in alongside Tyson Barrie. Stuart Skinner makes his second start in net this season.
