0.0: Play ‘La Bamba!’ The Oilers secure their third win in a row to begin the 2021-22 season, edging the young Ducks with a 6-5 effort. Draisaitl finishes the evening with two goals and two helpers, McDavid pots a goal and pair of assists and Kassian nets two critical game-tying goals. Smith stopped 11 of 15 shots and Koskinen parried 20 of 21 for a .952 save percentage.

1:13: MIKKO! The keeper extends his right pad to prevent a sure goal late.

2:07: The Oilers fail to covert on their latest advantage but continue to hold onto the one-goal lead. The club is 2-for-6 tonight.

4:56: Hyman drives to the house and draws a high-sticking minor against Henrique in the process. Edmonton gets their sixth powerplay tonight.

9:30: GLITCH GOAL! Bouchard one-hand swipes at the puck from the Ducks’ corner and it catches a bounce off Stolarz’s skate and goes in. The young defender is having himself a night with a marker and five shots on goal! EDM 5, ANA 4

11:41: Goal-line stand! Koskinen loses handle of the biscuit behind the cage and the Ducks muscle it to the crease but McDavid swipes it off the goal-line just in the knick of time. The Cap’ brings it at both ends of the ice.

14:33: FOUR ALL! Bouchard slides one on from the left circle and Kassian deflects it through Stolarz’s wickets for his second goal of the night. The Oilers energizer is having a big night before fans! | EDM 4, ANA 4

16:24: It’s all Oilers early in the 3rd! McDavid shimmies between two Ducks then passes to Bouchard on the outside, who looks for Puljujärvi on the doorstep to no avail. Shattenkirk takes a high-sticking minor and the Oilers get a chance to square this one up on the man advantage.

20:00: The puck has dropped on the third period with the Oilers in search of the equalizer.

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers trail by a score through 40 minutes as the Ducks strike twice in the middle stanza to take control.

1:09: Zegras orchestrates a cheeky, behind-the-back feed to Adam Henrique who slips a shot off the post and out. The Ducks are on a 7-1 shot run.

3:38: The Oilers neutralize Anaheim’s powerplay as Puljujärvi jumps out of the box.

5:58: Mikko Koskinen steps into the crease in relief of Smith. Puljujärvi is called for slashing after hacking & whacking with Trevor Zegras, giving Anaheim a powerplay.

8:25: Edmonton holds a commanding 27-14 shot advantage but it’s the Ducks that are up by one halfway through this tilt.

10:01: Steel gains a step on Barrie then goes to his backhand in the goalmouth for the go-ahead tally and his second of the evening. This one keeps going back and forth. | ANA 4, EDM 3

11:14: Nicolas Deslauriers wires the puck short-side to even the score once again. | EDM 3, ANA 3

12:10: Shattenkirk’s wrister catches a bounce before dinging Smith’s right post. Shots are 18-12 EDM.

14:49: Bouchard’s slapshot hits Stolarz in the mask and the netminder goes down to the ice. He gets some medical attention and eventually takes his position between the pipes. The former Oilers goalie looks to be alright.

16:47: Another call, this time Ducks defender Hampus Lindholm for closing his hand on the puck. The Oilers go 4-on-3 for 26 seconds.

17:41: The man advantage is nullified with Kyle Turris’ hooking infraction. The two sides go 4-on-4 for 1:20.

18:21: Nothing comes from Rakell’s abbreviated minor but the Oilers get a chance to reload as Shattenkirk heads off for tripping.

20:00: The uck has dropped on the second period! The Oilers have just over a minute of power-play time remaining.

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: A north-south first period comes to a close with the Oilers in charge by a goal. Shots are 11-10 EDM and the home side has the faceoff edge with a 52 percent average.

30.3:  2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣! Leon Draisaitl RIFLES a one-timer from his rightful spot on the right side for his 200th career NHL goal, which happens to be his first of the year! McDavid and Zach Hyman receive the assists as the Oilers take the lead and still have time left at 5-on-4.

54:4: The Oilers buzz around the Ducks’ net as the extra attacker is out due to a Ducks’ delayed penalty. Cam Fowler and Rickard Rakell each take a minor to give the Oilers full, two-minute 5-on-3.

4:53: Edmonton’s lead is short-lived as Steel sweeps a shot on net that trickles under Smith’s pad and in. | EDM 2, ANA 2

5:08: STOP & GOAL! Smith makes a HUGE stop on Trevor Zegras in tight and immediately the ice tilts the other way as Puljujärvi springs McDavid ahead to slip a 5-hole shot past Stolarz. The Captain has four goals this season. | EDM 2, ANA 1

5:54: Duncan Keith rams Sherwood Park product Sam Steel into the boards behind the Oilers net, prompting a big roar from the crowd.

11:13: AIRMAIL! Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ perfectly placed aerial pass drops onto Zack Kassian’s blade and he taps it into a yawning cage ever so easily. The Oilers knot it up with Kassian’s first of the year! Foegele gets the extra helper for his second assist of the season. | EDM 1, ANA 1

12:17: Barrie blocks a shot with his boot, slowly getting back to his feet to make a breakout play. He sits on the bench trying to shake off the pain.

13:42: Evan Bouchard targets Brendan Perlini’s blade for the redirection but Stolarz pops out to make the chest save.

14:53: Kevin Shattenkirk completes a pretty passing play with an upstairs shot on Smith to open the scoring for the visitors. | ANA 1, EDM 0

17:08: The Orange & Blue pour it on early, registering the first three shots of the match. McDavid missed off the rush and Warren Foegele’s wraparound pass couldn’t find a body in the slot, allowing former Oilers goaltender Anthony Stolarz to get the whistle.

20:00: Quack quack 🦆! Tonight’s action has begun as the Oilers face a non-Canadian team for the first time in a … long time. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Jesse Puljujärvi start up front while Darnell Nurse and Tyson Barrie lead the defence out. Mike Smith protects the blue paint!
