THIRD PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers get down 4-0 on the first four shots on goal and can’t battle back, losing 6-3 to the Canucks and seeing their three-game winning streak end. McDavid picks up three assists, Draisaitl scores twice and Smith stops 21 of 23 shots. The two teams go at it again on Saturday at Rogers Place.

7:06: BULLSEYE 🎯! Draisaitl SLAMS a one-timer in for his 28th of the year and second goal tonight. That’s back-to-back two-goal performances. McDavid nets his THIRD assist of the evening for 96 points and Nurse gets the other helper. | VAN 5, EDM 3

7:16: PENALTY SHOT! McDavid is slashed by Myers while on a breakaway and is awarded a penalty shot. The Oilers Captain tries to go backhand but can’t lift the puck over Demko’s pad.

9:20: Archibald goes off for hooking. VAN gets a fourth power play.

9:24: Chiasson gets his blade down for McDavid’s net-front feed but it goes just wide. Edmonton is now 1-for-5 on the man advantage tonight.

12:01: Myers gets his stick caught in Puljujärvi’s feet, warranting a tripping minor. The Oilers are 1-for-4 on the PP tonight already.

14:26: The puck squirts out to Bear and he sends it right on net but Demko holds tight for no rebound.

17:24: The animosity reaches a boiling point as Nurse and MacEwan drop the mitts. MacEwan lands more blows but Nurse gets the takedown. Nurse gets the extra penalty for cross-checking in front of the net. Oilers go shorthanded.

18:31: Smith kicks the period off with an emphatic trapper save on Tyler Myer’s high wrist shot.

20:00: The third period has begun!

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers head into the third down by three. Shots are 31-18 EDM after 40 minutes.

2:04: McDavid twirls to make a behind-the-back pass to the slot but Puljujärvi’s feeble shot is stopped.

4:51: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ wrister hits James Neal in front and Draisaitl’s one-timer from the right side can’t find a hole through as the Oilers fail to capitalize on the extended power play. Nurse mixes it up with MacEwan once he’s out of the box and takes a slashing minor.

9:01: Draisaitl tries to open up Thatcher Demko with a backhander on a breakaway to no avail. Nurse is dumped in the neutral zone then takes a high stick, sending MacEwan to the box for a double minor. Edmonton gets four minutes of man-advantage time.

10:18: Graovac places a shot accurately off Smith’s bucket and in. Vancouver restores a three-goal lead. | VAN 5, EDM 2

10:24: Hamonic and Chiasson scrap in the neutral zone after Hamonic caught the Oilers winger up high with a hit. They both go off for five minutes.

10:47: MacEwan tries to sneak through Smith’s crease for a loose puck but wipes out and takes the goaltender down with him.

15:08: J.T. Miller attacks from the right side, releasing a far-side shot that Smith stops with his blocker.

18:49: Smith gets a pad on Nate Schmidt’s one-timer then squeezes them tight to stop Zack MacEwen’s rebound attempt.

20:00: The second period has begun! Oilers still have some work to do down by a pair.

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers gain life late with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit in half entering the middle stanza.

1:23: POOL PARTY! Jesse Puljujärvi RIPS the top corner off a feed from McDavid for his 14th goal of the season. The big Finn continues to impress. McDavid now has two assists tonight and is at 95 points. | VAN 4, EDM 2

3:19 QUICK UP! Draisaitl fires a laser far side after McDavid is sprung on a partial break by Smith. Draisaitl scores his 27th, Smith gets the goalie assist and McDavid is now six points closer to 100 with his 63rd helper and 94th point! | VAN 4, EDM 1

4:14: Edmonton goes back to the man advantage as Tyler Graovac takes a high-sticking minor.

5:51: Smith is tested early as the Canucks try to punch home another goal but the keeper stands his ground in the crease. Edmonton tries to get the offence going at the other end with Darnell Nurse looking for Kailer Yamamoto and the high tip unsuccessfully.

7:38: Jayce Hawryluk spins and shoots from the slot, slipping a knuckle puck under Koskinen. Mike Smith enters the crease for the Oilers. Koskinen’s night ends with four goals against on four shots.

10:14: Leon Draisaitl ends the man advantage by taking a slashing penalty. We’ll get 4-on-4 action for 1:46.

10:28: Hoglander is whistled for interference. The Oilers look to get on the board with their top-ranked power play.

13:27: Koskinen gets a piece of Travis Hamonic’s slap shot but not enough as it trickles in behind him. Three shots have yielded three goals for the Canucks early in this one.

15:17: Jack Rathbone scoops up a rebound following a blocked shot then roofs home another glove-side shot for his first career National Hockey League goal. | VAN 2, EDM 0

19:29: Nils Hoglander shifts into the slot then snipes glove side to score on the opening shot of the game. | VAN 1, EDM 0

20:00: Tonight’s game has begun! Patrick Russell gets in the lineup for the first time since March 13 while Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones slot back in as Edmonton’s third defence pairing. James Neal replaces Tyler Ennis on the third line left wing.
