THIRD PERIOD
0.0: EXTINGUISHED! The Oilers work back from a deficit to defeat the Calgary Flames 3-2 in the seventh Battle of Alberta of the year! McDavid nets the game-winning goal, Draisaitl dishes two assists and Smith stops 24 pucks for his 13th victory. Edmonton is scheduled to face the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.
1:03: The Flames pull Markstrom for the extra attacker after Monahan’s penalty expires. The visitors work it around the Oilers zone and it leads to an Andersson blast that Smith catches emphatically.
5:13: Monahan is guilty of a cross-checking penalty against Kahun, giving the Oilers a chance to add some insurance on the man advantage.
9:38: Hanifin lets one fly off the rush but Smith snares it for the whistle. Shots are 25-22 EDM with under 10 to play in regulation.
12:59: THE CAPTAIN! McDavid WHIPS a wrister right off the draw and it trickles through Markstrom to give the Oilers their first lead of the game. McDavid scores his 22nd of the season and 64th point. Draisaitl gets the lone apple. | EDM 3, CGY 2
13:03: Noah Hanifin tries to impede Yamamoto from getting to the net but takes an interference penalty instead. Huge opportunity coming to the Oilers on their fourth power play of the evening.
14:03: Draisaitl uses the eyes on the back of his head to make a behind-the-back pass to Yamamoto but he can’t get enough mustard on the puck to put it past Markstrom.
16:46: The Oilers don’t let Calgary set up in their zone to get the kill. After the penalty expired, Nurse just missed a one-timer low glove side on Markstrom.
20:00: The puck has dropped on the third period with the Oilers shorthanded.
SECOND PERIOD
0.0: An eventful middle stanza comes to an end with the score deadlocked at 2-2. Zack Kassian takes a boarding penalty at the whistle, so the Oilers will start the third period shorthanded.
2:26: HOLD THE DOOR! Smith is handcuffed by a blocked shot, leaving a yawning cage for Elias Lindholm but several Oilers get in the lane to deflect his shot wide.
8:13: Tkachuk and Draisaitl both get roughing minors for mixing it up. We’ll see 4-on-4 action for two minutes.
8:31: KAHUNA-MATATA! Kahun caps a great passing play with a tap-in equalizer for his sixth of the season. Assists go to Yamamoto and Bear! | EDM 2, CGY 2
14:35: Tkachuk gets out of the box and is sprung on a breakaway, going backhand on Smith for the go-ahead goal. | CGY 2, EDM 1
16:45: SCHMIDDY! The Oilers puck-stopper DENIES Sean Monahan from the top of the key with his glove hand. Matthew Tkachuk takes a slashing penalty to cut Calgary’s power play short.
17:46: Adam Larsson cross-checks Sam Bennett, sending the Flames to the man advantage.
18:41: JUST LIKE THAT! Nugent-Hopkins deposits a rebound with a backhander after a nifty passing play by the top power-play unit. Draisaitl and McDavid get the helpers. | EDM 1, CGY 1
18:54: Chris Tanev brings Yamamoto down along the boards, warranting a tripping penalty. Edmonton goes back to the power play.
20:00: The second period is under way!
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: The Flames take a 1-0 lead into the second period despite being out-shot 14-8 in the opening 20.
2:16: Darnell Nurse’s pass is intercepted by Milan Lucic, allowing the former Oiler to get a 5-hole shot on Smith from below the right dot.
7:37: Michael Stone fires a bullet from the point to open the scoring. | CGY 1, EDM 0
8:08: McDavid goes to Draisaitl in front of the net but he is stopped and the rebound is covered up by Markstrom for the whistle. Edmonton goes 0-for-1 on their first power play but continues to hound the Flames with a 9-2 shot advantage.
10:38: The Oilers put pressure on the Flames with hard forechecking and relentless effort. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is stopped after a give-and-go with McDavid and Jesse Puljujärvi’s one-timer catches a piece of Markstrom. McDavid draws a penalty against Rasmus Andersson to give the Oilers the game’s first power play.
13:23: Alex Chiasson carries the puck into the offensive zone, hooks three Flames players to him then dishes over to Jujhar Khaira on the wing but his shot is stopped by Jacob Markstrom.
15:17: Johnny Gaudreau attacks off the rush, trying to sneak the puck through Smith’s wickets to no avail. Tyson Barrie crashes into Smith after the whistle and takes him out but the keeper and defender are both good.
16:45: The Oilers jump out with some early energy to put the Flames on their heels, throwing around the body and three shots on goal through the opening five minutes of play.
20:00: Let the Battle begin! Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl centre their own lines as Dominik Kahun jumps back into the mix upfront. Caleb Jones partners up with Ethan Bear on the blueline. Mike Smith starts in net.
