9:38: Nugent-Hopkins battles Tavares for the puck and ends up dumping him to the ice, causing the ref to raise his arm and call a tripping penalty. Toronto is 1-for-4 on the PP tonight.

12:14: Smith shuts the door shorthanded. McDavid makes a net-front pass from behind the goal-line at the other end and the puck finds its way to Tyler Ennis in tight but he can’t lift it in.

14:36: Zach Hyman barrels in for a shot off the rush then falls and crashes into Smith. The keeper gives Hyman a parting shot before getting up, warranting a roughing minor. Edmonton goes back to the kill.

15:31: Draisaitl goes to his forehand on a shorthanded breakaway but is denied by Andersen.

20:00: The third period has begun with the Oilers down a man.

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: The Leafs tally four goals in the middle stanza while Nugent-Hopkins gets on the board for Edmonton. The Oilers enter the third in a four-goal deficit and shorthanded for 1:44.

16.2: Joakim Nygard is called for tripping.

6:14: NUUUUUUGE! Nugent-Hopkins deposits a Draisaitl rebound to FINALLY crack the Maple Leafs. RNH is up to 10 goals this year, Draisaitl gets his 25th assist and Russell picks up the secondary helper. Edmonton still trails by three with just under six minutes to play in the second. | TOR 4, EDM 1

6:49: The Oilers get some help from Smith to suppress Toronto’s second power play of the evening. The visitors have four power-play shots on goal.

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: The first period comes to a close with the Leafs up a single. Shots are 10-9 TOR after 20.

3:16: Jujhar Khaira turns the puck over in front of Smith and Pierre Engvall gets a glorious opportunity but can’t lift it over Smith’s pad.

7:15: The Maple Leafs sustain pressure in the Oilers zone but Draisaitl and Yamamoto eventually tilt the ice the other way with a 2-on-1. Draisaitl tries to go across to Yamamoto but T.J. Brodie foils the pass.

9:07: The Oilers remain unable to score in the series through 69 shots as James Neal whips a quick snap shot on Andersen from the right circle. The visiting netminder has eight saves tonight.

10:57: Jason Spezza goes cross-crease to Jimmy Vesey and he puts it short-side on Smith for the opening goal. | TOR 1, EDM 0

13:32: It’s all Oilers early with the club running up a 5-0 shot count until Matthews attacks off the wing and kisses the iron with a wicked wrist shot. Smith gets some help from the bar then reacts in time to kick aside the rebound from Joe Thornton.

20:00: Tonight’s game has begun! The Oilers will be without Dominik Kahun and Alex Chiasson in the third and final game of their series with the Maple Leafs. James Neal will play left wing alongside Connor McDavid and Jesse Puljujarvi while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Kailer Yamamoto look to rekindle the chemistry they shared last season. Mike Smith protects the blue paint. Auston Matthews and Frederik Andersen return for Toronto.
