THIRD PERIOD
0.0: Oilers are trumped in Washington, falling 4-2 to the Caps. The teams split the season series 1-1. Edmonton gets a chance to get back into the win column Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
1:03: Oilers pull Talbot with just over two minutes left. Backstrom takes a penalty, giving the Oilers a 6-on-4 late.
4:21: Copley pumps Ryan Strome’s wrister away with his shoulder. Oilers go on a 7-0 shot run but can’t buy one.
8:46: Klefbom drives one form the point and the Oilers scramble for the rebound but Copley covers it up.
11:47: The Caps manufacture some slick passing within the Oilers zone but Brett Connolly can’t close the play. Oilers still looking for two to tie it up.
15:34: Oscar Klefbom spins a backhander at the net but Copley gets his right pad on the puck to kick it away.
20:00: The third period has begun. Oilers down by a pair.
SECOND PERIOD
1:04: Jesse Puljujarvi gets a shot off from the side of the net but it goes wide. The Oilers fourth line follows it up with another dogged shift but can’t convert.
3:26: Talbot stops Chandler Stephenson’s 5-hole slip on the breakaway.
6:51: Ovechkin from his office on the power play. Caps take the two-goal lead again. | WSH 4, EDM 2
7:36: Larsson goes off for slashing. Edmonton back to the kill for the second time tonight.
9:19: BACK WITHIN ONE! Adam Larsson slap-passes the puck to Draisaitl for the redirection. That’s Draisaitl’s eighth goal and 15th point of the campaign. Edmonton pulls within one again. | WSH 3, EDM 2
11:22: Washington clears the puck out of danger after Copley misplays it, warranting a delay of game penalty.
11:49: Nicklas Backstrom makes a nice spinning backhand pass to Oshie in the slot. He lifts it over Talbot’s shoulder to regain the two-goal lead. | WSH 3, EDM 1
14:53: Drake Caggiula lets one fly from the slot. Copley stops it but the rebound ricochets off Dmitry Orlov’s skate and hits the post. Oilers get close.
15:53: Evgeny Kuznetsov tries to find Ovechkin on the doorstep but The Great Eight misses the pass.
17:49: Khaira just misses Matt Benning streaking to the net but he throws it at the crease looking for a play.
20:00: The second period has begun.
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: Oilers do a good job of killing Draisaitl’s minor as only three seconds remain in the penalty. Edmonton trails 2-1 after 20, leading the shot count 12-11.
1:05: Kris Russell eats an Ovechkin one-timer. Oshie and Ovie both give the defenceman props right after.
1:57: Talbot makes a big save on T.J. Oshie’s deflection in front. Draisaitl later gets called for slashing. Washington’s top-ranked power play goes to work.
4:04: Talbot gets in the butterfly position to stop Andre Burakovsky.
4:39: Leon Draisaitl fires one through a defender going 1-on-1 then Tobias Rieder follows the rebound up with a blast but Copley keeps the door shut. Oilers continue looking for the equalizer.
7:12: McDavid almost notches another, aiming blocker side off the rush but Copley gets a piece.
9:36: CONNOR! McDavid wrists it from the right circle to beat Copley short side. That’s his 10th of the year and eighth straight game with a point. Oilers cut the lead in half and are 1-for-2 on the PP now. | WSH 2, EDM 1
10:56: Jujhar Khaira gets a feed at the net but Alex Ovechkin disrupts him enough to thwart his attempt. Ovie is called for slashing as a result. Oilers back on the PP.
13:47: Matt Niskanen hauls down Connor McDavid just within the O-zone. Oilers get the first power play of the night.
14:16: Washington’s fourth line is at it again. Smith-Pelly fires Boyd’s drop-pass glove side on Talbot for the two-goal lead. | WSH 2, EDM 0
14:42: Ryan Strome finds a streaking Milan Lucic for a partial break but netminder Pheonix Copley stops the winger. Third line with some jump early.
17:16: Travis Boyd drives to the net hard and Cam Talbot stops the first shot but Devante Smith-Pelly scoops up the loose puck and finds Jakub Vrana in the slot for a far side goal. Caps open the scoring less than four minutes in. | WSH 1, EDM 0
