THIRD PERIOD
VICTORY!!! The Canucks spoiled the shutout for Koskinen late, but a perfect 2-for-2 night for the Oilers power play did the heavy lifting in front of him in a 2-1 win. Edmonton improves to 6-1-0 on the year, handing the Canucks their third-straight loss on home ice. Speaking of home — we start a three-game homestand on Monday against the Seattle Kraken!
5.0: Well that’s a spoiler. Brock Boeser goes up top in the final seconds to end Koskinen’s shutout. EDM 2, VAN 1
59.o: MONSTROUS MIKKO! MONSTROUS KILL!
3:01: Canucks get their first PP chance late in this game. Good chance for the Canucks to push back with their net empty with a 6-on-4 opportunity.
4:25: We’re into the final minutes here as Edmonton defends a two-goal lead. Canucks are pulling their net early here for a long look at a comeback.
11:06: McDavid just can’t buy one. On two separate occasions, the captain drove the Canucks goal but just couldn’t find the back of the net thanks in large part to Demko, who’s been great this game for Vancouver with 29 stops so far.
17:59: McDavid gets one, two, three shots at it from the left of goal but can’t lift the puck over Demko!
20:00: Roll on the third period!
SECOND PERIOD
0.0: A quick second period ends with a bang for Edmonton, who tack on another PP goal late to take a 2-0 lead into the final frame.
39.1: LEON BURIES IT!!! There’s that patented PP one-timer we all know and love. Nugent-Hopkins delivers his 10th assist of his season on a platter for Draisaitl to bury, with McDavid getting the second helper to extend his point streak against Vancouver to 11 games. We’re 2-for-2 on the power play, with each unit accounting for half of the production.
2:07: Yamo gets high-sticked along the benches to send the Oilers to their second PP of the night!
2:48: We’re moving at a frenetic pace here, with nothing to show for it in the second period. Teams are trading spells of momentum, but aren’t generating any Grade-A chances. Shots are 22-17 in favour of the Oilers.
9:46: This has definitely been Vancouver’s period. A long shift in the offensive zone pinned the Oilers top line deep, but they escaped unscathed.
14:48: Koskinen stands tall and covers a rebound to give us a break in play. Edmonton leads 15-10 on the shot clock a quarter of the way through this second period, but the Canucks are pressing.
20:00: The second period is underway!
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: An entertaining first 20 minutes of action conclude with the Oilers ahead 1-0, converting their only power play through Foegele.
7:21: McDavid picks off Hughes’ wayward pass before feeding Puljujarvi for an open look, but the Finn put it off the post and across the crease. Close call.
8:21: WARREN!!! GET IT IN THERE!!! With the power play expiring, Darnell Nurse let a wrist shot go from the right circle that was left an uncovered rebound for Foegele to drive home. It’s the winger’s second goal and fourth point of the season, with Evan Bouchard getting the second assist. Advantage Edmonton. | EDM 1, VAN 0
9:51: McDavid tees up a one-timer but Demko makes a big stop.
10:20: Quinn Hughes has to hook Jesse Puljujarvi to prevent the Finn from getting a clean shot. Oilers to the PP!
12:25: Duncan Keith strikes the crossbar! Best look of the game so far. The Canucks fans still rain boo’s down on the defenceman as a former member of the Chicago Blackhawks. We all remember those battles.
13:35: Good pressure from this Oilers top line, hemming Vancouver in deep and holding plenty of possession before McDavid has his shot stopped from the left of Demko.
15:34: Nugent-Hopkins picks off Thatcher Demko’s pass, but has his ensuing shot stopped and frozen by the netminder. Could’ve been deadly.
17:06: THUNDEROUS hit by Zack Kassian on Vasili Podkolzin!
20:00: DROP IT! Rogers Arena is buzzin, how ’bout you? We’re underway!
20:00: Rogers Arena is the venue where the Oilers will attempt to restart their win streak that saw the club go 5-0-0 in its opening five games of the season before losing 5-3 the Flyers on Wednesday. Tyler Benson is back in the lineup for the Oilers in place of Brendan Perlini on the fourth line, while Mikko Koskinen is set to start his fourth-straight game in the absence of Mike Smith.
