SECOND PERIOD
0.0: The Oilers penalty kill unit does a relentless job of suppressing the Flames power play. Edmonton carries a two-goal, 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes.
2:15: The Oilers pepper Markstrom with four man-advantage shots but can’t crack him. Kassian takes a slashing minor.
5:15: Yamamoto finds the puck on his blade ahead of the Flames’ crease but is cross-checked from behind by Sam Bennett. The Flames forward will be in the sin bin for two minutes.
10:52: Elias Lindholm deposits Matthew Tkachuk’s centring feed to put the Flames on the board. | EDM 3, CGY 1
11:21: GERMAN. PRECISION. Draisaitl feathers a perfect feed through his legs to Kahun, who slams the puck with a wicked one-timer from the right circle. Kahun tallies his fifth goal in his first game since March 6. Barrie picks up his second helper of the evening. | EDM 3, CGY 0
12:03: The Flames cook up some pressure in the Oilers zone, getting prime chances from Sean Monahan and Dillon Dube.
16:42: Noah Hanifin gets a good look from the top of the key but Smith challenges the shot to deny the defender.
20:00: The second period has begun!
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: Nugent-Hopkins and Puljujärvi power the Oilers in the opening 20, putting the club ahead 2-0 to enter the middle period. Nine shots faced, nine saves for Smith while Markstrom stops seven.
35.1: Johnny Gaudreau pulls some fancy stick work to create space then slides a 5-hole shot on net but Smith keeps the door shut and the Oilers kill the power play.
2:40: Kailer Yamamoto gets his stick into the feet of Mark Giordano, causing the defender to fall. Yamamoto will head off for tripping.
3:24: Shots are 9-6 EDM as the first period winds down. The Oilers also have seven hits this frame to Calgary’s four.
9:26: McDavid almost shoots out on a breakaway but Rasmus Andersson prevents it from happening. Ritchie later walks into the Oilers zone and whips a wrister on net but Smith makes an animated blocker save.
12:38: LET’S GO! Barrie WIRES a shot from the point and Jesse Puljujärvi gets a piece of it in front as the puck squirts through Jacob Markstrom’s wickets. Edmonton jumps out to a two-goal lead early on after the power-play goal. | EDM 2, CGY 0
14:26: Brett Ritchie hacks Kris Russell’s stick out of his hands during a puck battle. You can’t do that. Ritchie will sit two minutes for slashing.
15:21: NUUUUUUGE! McDavid intercepts a pass in the slot and finds Ryan Nugent-Hopkins wide open at the side of the net to open the scoring. RNH nabs his 11th goal of the year and McDavid gets point No. 54. | EDM 1, CGY 0
16:34: Smith is challenged early with a point-blank shot from Elias Lindholm but the netminder makes the big stop.
20:00: The Battle of Alberta has begun! Dominik Kahun, Zack Kassian and Tyson Barrie are all in the lineup tonight while James Neal and Jujhar Khaira are out. Mike Smith holds down the fort in net.
