OVERTIME
1:03: ARCHIE! OVERRRRRRTIME WINNER! The Oilers get caught out for an extended shift but Draisaitl finds Archibald ahead of the crease and he goes low on Reimer for the winner! That’s Archie’s second of the night and THIRD point for Draisaitl, who now has 95 on the year! This trip is ALL OVER with the Oilers nabbing two wins and four points out of six. Next up is Boston on Wednesday!
5:00: Draisaitl, Yamamoto and Klefbom kick the Oilers off in overtime.
THIRD PERIOD
0.0: Aho knots it up late but the Oilers salvage a massive single point at the very least in this one. Draisaitl has a goal and assist while Smith has 23 saves after regulation.
3:02: Some back-and-forth play between the two sides as this one is going down to the wire. Shots are 26-22 CAR.
5:02: Aho hammers a shot 5-hole for his second of the game. This one is all tied up with under five to go. | EDM 3, CAR 3
5:56: Another HUGE power play is stymied by the Oilers. Chiasson later shoots and Riley Sheahan slams at the rebound but hits the post.
9:17: Cave is called for tripping after getting his stick caught in Foegele’s skates. The Oilers will look to kill their second power play of the period and third of the day.
14:30: Khaira goes off for tripping. Big kill incoming for the Oilers, who have the NHL’s best road PK (89.5%).
15:53: Jordan Staal drives wide to the net, sweeping the puck across the crease unsuccessfully.
20:00: The third period has begun.
SECOND PERIOD
0.0: Yamamoto tied it up then Archibald got the Oilers the go-ahead goal 28 seconds later as the visitors head into the third period leading 3-2 against the Canes. Benson picks up career point No. 1 with a beauty of an assist on Archibald’s tally. Shots are 20-16 EDM.
1:04: Carolina pushes right back with Warren Foegele buzzing around the Oilers net but Smith stays alive to keep the lead intact.
4:59: GRAB THAT PUCK! Benson feeds Archibald with some space and the winger goes roof on Reimer to make it two goals in 28 seconds for the Oilers! That’s Benson’s first career NHL point and Archibald’s eighth goal. | EDM 3, CAR 2
5:27: YAMO STAYS HOT! Kailer Yamamoto fires from the slot and then bounces off Reimer and in for his ninth of the year! Draisaitl picks up the primary assist for his second point of the night and 94th of the year. Klefbom gets the secondary helper. | EDM 2, CAR 2
6:26: The Oilers get their third man advantage as Haula goes off for tripping.
10:34: Alex Chiasson’s one-timer from the slot is robbed then the forward just misses a rebound off an Oscar Klefbom point wrister. The Oilers are 0-for-2 on the power play.
13:42: Josh Archibald digs DEEP on the forecheck, pestering Nino Niederreiter and Erik Haula enough that both jump the Oilers forward. All mayhem then ensues as all three go to the box. The Oilers receive a power play as a result of the fisticuffs.
14:41: Sebastian Aho goes forehand on a breakaway for his 32nd of the season to give the Canes the lead. | CAR 2, EDM 1
16:42: Gaëtan Haas jets around the Hurricanes net, sending a pass across the crease that goes through Markus Granlund’s skates. Larsson follows up with a blast that goes wide.
18:24: The Canes throw three shots at Smith but he and the Oilers neutralize the man advantage. Both teams are 0-for-1 on the PP today.
20:00: The second period has begun with the Oilers on the penalty kill.
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: The Canes open the scoring on their first shot 12 seconds in but Draisaitl replies with his fifth goal and 10th point in his last five. He has 93 (!) points on the season now!
45.4: Adam Larsson is called for slashing after whacking Svechnikov’s stick out of his hands on a partial break.
1:37: Jaccob Slavin tees one up from the blueline and Smith hugs the post for the stop.
2:39: Colby Cave whiffs on a shot from the slot but Patrick Russell chops at it, causing problems for Reimer as Khaira hunts for the rebound. The Canes keeper eventually finds the puck and covers it.
4:34: The Oilers string together a few strong shifts, keeping the majority of possession low in the Canes’ zone. Tyler Benson, appearing in his fourth game, continues looking more comfortable after making a great breakout pass in the D-zone then turning up on the forecheck.
11:03: Smith stands up to Haydn Fleury’s wrister from the top of the left circle.
13:32: DON’T FORGET ABOUT DRAI! Leon Draisaitl creeps in at just the right moment to put back Jujhar Khaira’s heads-up pass from in front. Draisaitl’s 34th of the season extends his point streak to five games. Khaira and Nurse get the helpers. | EDM 1, CAR 1
