2:02: The Oilers get close on the man advantage but can’t bury.
5:14: The Preds take yet another penalty, this time a tripping minor by Granlund. Oilers get a chance to pad their lead.
6:58: BARDOWN ?! Draisaitl SNIPES his second of the game with a bar down sizzler from the sidewall. He now has 31 goals on the year! Nugent-Hopkins and Klefbom now have two assists on the evening each. Oilers get their first lead of the night! | EDM 3, NSH 2
7:15: The Oilers will get an abbreviated 4-on-3 power play after an interference call against Jarred Tinordi.
13:49: Edmonton’s penalty killers do a good job of keeping the Preds at bay. Gagner jumped out the box after his penalty expired and fired a clapper that Saros snared.
16:00: Sam Gagner gets two for high sticking as the Oilers need a big kill here.
16:18: NUMBER 30! Draisaitl picks his spot far side off the rush to even this one up at 2-2! That’s his 30th of the season. Nugent-Hopkins and Yamamoto get in on the goal with an assist each. | EDM 2, NSH 2
16:29: Viktor Arvidsson gets a feed then tries to wait out Smith to the outside but runs out of real estate.
17:40: McDavid dings the crossbar at one end then Smith makes a pair of clutch saves at the other.
20:00: The third period has begun! ?
SECOND PERIOD
0.0: Chiasson’s late one cuts the Oilers deficit in half as the home side trails 2-1 after 40. Shots are 23-19 EDM.
8.1: ON THE BOARD! McDavid whips one on net and the rebound banks off Alex Chiasson then a Predator and in! McDavid gets credit for the goal but Chiasson could be awarded it after. HUGE goal before the end of the frame. | NSH 2, EDM 1
1:22: The Oilers push for a late one and end up being rewarded with a power play as Dante Fabbro goes off for hooking.
2:54: Nick Bonino changes the direction of Dan Hamhuis’ point shot and it eludes Smith. | NSH 2, EDM 0
4:37: The Preds press from below the goal-line but the Oilers stay in position and calmly exit the zone. The club still looks for the equalizer late in the second.
9:42: Josh Archibald redirects Klefbom’s point wrister neatly but it misses the cage. Shots are now 17-14 NSH. McDavid was also back on the ice.
12:05: Yamamoto gets a piece of Klefbom’s wraparound but the puck skitters just wide of the post. The winger later mixes it up with Granlund until Larsson steps in.
15:16: McDavid falls awkwardly into the boards and stays down for a brief period after, eventually getting up to help orchestrate a Draisaitl one-timer.
17:34: SMITH! The keeper foils Mikael Granlund all alone in close then kicks aside a big blast from the point.
18:27: Darnell Nurse gets his hands on Matt Duchene to warrant a holding penalty. Edmonton goes back to the kill.
20:00: The second period has begun!
FIRST PERIOD
0.0: The Oilers exit the opening 20 down 1-0 due to Smith’s even-strength tally. Shots are 7-7 after the 1st.
2:09: The Oilers fail to convert on the abbreviated man advantage but some good news comes to the club as Klefbom was back on the ice.
4:43: Nashville goal scorer Smith ends the Preds PP with a high-sticking minor against Adam Larsson. The two sides will go 4-on-4 for 1:16 then the Oilers get 44 seconds of power-play time.
5:27: McDavid is called for hooking, sending the Predators to the game’s first power play.
7:43: Craig Smith chops at a loose puck and it finds its way just inside the post as the Preds take a 1-0 lead. | NSH 1, EDM 0
11:55: Oscar Klefbom makes a great defensive effort to break up a 3-on-1 but blocks a shot that sends him to the bench stinging.
13:02: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins takes Leon Draisaitl’s cross-ice pass but has nothing to shoot at on Saros as the goalie keeps Nuge’s wrister out. Kailer Yamamoto later digs for the rebound and gets the puck to cross the line but it was after the whistle, so that’s no goal.
17:45: SMITHERS! Goaltender Mike Smith is ON in his 600th career NHL game, kicking away Ryan Johansen’s numerous attempts from the doorstep. The ice tilts the other way and Connor McDavid almost out-waits Juuse Saros in front but can’t get it to go.
20:00: We are under way on Hockey Day in Canada! Caleb Jones re-enters the lineup while Tyler Benson gets into his second career NHL match.
