18:23: Edmonton gets an early man advantage after McDavid was tripped up in the neutral zone by Danault.

20:00: The third period is under way! The Oilers are still looking for the equalizer.

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: McDavid JUST misses the short side on a cheeky flip shot. The Oilers head into the third down 2-1 thanks to Sheahan’s fifth goal of the season.

1:10: Nate Thompson beats Smith on his backhand while attacking on a clear-cut breakaway but he can’t beat the post. The Oilers still trail by a solo.

8:58: Smith gloves down a riser from outside. He now has 18 saves on the night.

12:04: SMITHERS! The keeper gets across to foil Danault’s shot from the doorstep.

12:44: SHEAHAN SNIPES! Nygard wins a battle along the boards then pokes the puck to Riley Sheahan who lifts it top cheese on Price. Sheahan is up to five goals on the year now while Nygard collects his eighth point with the helper. | MTL 2, EDM 1

14:42: Danault busts in on a partial break but Smith pushes out to make the stop.

20:00: The second period has begun!

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: Brendan Gallagher cuts inside on the rush but Smith stays with it. The Canadiens will take a 1-0 lead into the second. Shots after 20 are 14-5 MTL but the Oilers had many looks.

1:35: McDavid looks for James Neal on the doorstep and finds him but his redirection goes wide of the cage. Smith later scrambles to stop the Habs from going up by two as they press.

7:25: Phillip Danault puts a puck on net then deposits his own rebound to open the scoring. | MTL 1, EDM 0

8:12: Joakim Nygard misses the far post with a backhand wraparound.

9:25: Lots of chances for the Oilers on their first power play, including a great solo dash by Connor McDavid but Price keeps all four shots from going in.

11:40: Jeff Petry grabs ahold of Leon Draisaitl and doesn’t let him walk past him. Petry gets two minutes for holding. The Oilers go to the power play.

12:15: Plenty of pucks being thrown at Mike Smith early but the goalie keeps his paddle down to keep them out.

13:47: The Oilers kill Chiasson’s minor then he jumps out of the box and immediately gets a look at Carey Price, fanning on his shot at the last second. The Oilers still do not have a shot on goal.

17:45: The hometown boy Alex Chiasson is called for holding the stick. Montreal is awarded the game’s first man advantage.

18:07: Adam Larsson welcomes Ilya Kovalchuk to his 900th career game with a big hit along the boards. The Oilers are still looking for their first shot on goal.

20:00: Bonjour from the Bell Centre! Tonight’s game has begun!
