THIRD PERIOD

0.0: The Penguins hand the Oilers a 5-2 loss. Edmonton hits the ice Saturday against the Habs at Rogers Place.

1:24: Evgeni Malkin goes to the net and crashes into Smith. The keeper doesn’t like it, immediately challenging the Russian. A scrum ensues and both players are handed penalties.

2:18: Brandon Tanev scores on the empty net. PIT pulls ahead by three. | PIT 5, EDM 2

2:26: The Oilers pull Smith in favour of the 6-on-5 advantage.

3:36: McDavid dumps in a rebound but the goal is immediately waived off because the Oilers Captain was in the crease in Jarry’s way.

5:50: James Neal is T’d up in the slot but sends his one-timer wide on the short side.

8:23: The Pens attack on a 3-on-1 and Smith turns aside every shot he faces to keep the game within reach.

15:19: Adam Larsson catches a piece of the post and the puck is cleared before any Oiler can get to the rebound.

19:22: Letang wires the puck glove side on the power play. The Pens regain the two-goal lead once again. | PIT 4, EDM 2

20:00: The third period has begun.

SECOND PERIOD

0.0: The two sides go back-and-forth in the second, with the Oilers down by a single to enter the third thanks to Sheahan’s shorty. Shots after 40 minutes are 19-15 Oilers.

22.4: SHORTHANDED SHEAHAN! Josh Archibald intercepts a feed in the Oilers zone then pushes the puck up to Riley Sheahan, who skates in and whips a wrister top corner to get Edmonton within one again. That’s the Oilers first SH goal of the year! | PIT 3, EDM 2

1:10: Joakim Nygard is sent off for tripping. The Pens get their first man advantage of the evening.

4:22: Bear is unable to handle a hot pass on the blueline, sending Jared McCann in all alone. He goes backhand to regain the two-goal lead for Pittsburgh. | PIT 3, EDM 1

4:33: McDavid walks in and releases a zinger that catches Jarry in the shoulder. The Oilers continue to push for the equalizer. The home side is out-shooting the Pens 9-3 in the middle stanza.

8:12: Kassian is fed in front by Nugent-Hopkins but Pittsburgh defenceman Marcus Petterssen checks him to foil the attempt.

13:19: OILERS GET ON THE BOARD! Darnell Nurse shoots from the blueline and Zack Kassian tips it in for his 13th of the season and 25th point. The assists go to the aforementioned Nurse and Ethan Bear. | PIT 2, EDM 1

20:00: The second period has begun.

FIRST PERIOD

0.0: The Oilers exit the first trailing by a pair. The club will have 34 seconds of power-play time to work with once the second period begins.

1:26: Leon Draisaitl gets a pass in the neutral zone along the boards and muscles his way to the net, forcing former Oilers prospect John Marino to take a holding penalty. The Oilers go back to the power play.

2:30: Smith stops Teddy Blueger’s quick rip from the kitchen.

3:32: Shots are 8-7 EDM near the end of the first period.

7:04: Blandisi is sprung on a breakaway immediately after stepping out of the box, going 5-hole on his backhand to put the Pens up by a pair. | PIT 2, EDM 0

9:11: Joseph Blandisi stick checks Riley Sheahan in the neutral zone and gets two minutes for hooking. The Oilers power play goes to work for the first time tonight.

12:04: Chad Ruhwedel lets a point shot go and it squeaks through Mike Smith. The Pens open the scoring. | PIT 1, EDM 0

13:52: Kris Letang botches a pass and Alex Chiasson intercepts the puck, walking in and unloading a clapper on Tristan Jarry but the former Edmonton Oil Kings keeper makes the glove save.

18:30: McDavid corrals the puck in the slot then spins and fires but catches the outside of the post.

20:00: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins joins Connor McDavid on the Oilers top line as tonight’s game has begun!
